Miseducation Of Cancer

The Miseducation of Cancer: What do we really know about it?

For years we have been misinformed as to what causes cancer and the different forms. Cancer can affect from a newborn to a senior citizen. There are several forms of cancers. Some are more aggressive than others. They affect the body in many different ways, I am here to try to dispel some of the myths associated with cancer and its effects on the body. Every minute on social media we see people affected by cancer or a myth as to what causes cancer. I have heard stand by the microwave too long and you can get cancer, if you eat certain foods you can get cancer. In recent years since I have had cancer affect so many of my loved ones and friends’ lives, I conducted my own research as to what may cause cancer. I have gotten so many answers from tobacco to genetics. Here a just a few facts concerning cancer that I have found.

According to the American Cancer Association (2014), cancer is a general name for a group of more than 100 diseases. There are several forms of cancer, all cancers start because of abnormal cell growth. Cancer cells often travel to other parts of the body where they can grow and form new tumors. This happens when the cancer cells get into the body’s bloodstream or lymph vessels. The process of cancer spreading is called metastasis.

There are different forms of cancer and different types of cancer can behave very differently. For instance, lung cancer and skin cancer are very different diseases. They grow at different rates and respond to different treatments. This is why people with cancer need treatment that’s aimed at their kind of cancer. There are several ways that cancer is treated surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, targeted therapy, immunotherapy, hyperthermia, stem cell transplant, photo dynamic therapy, laser treatment, blood product donation and transfusion, and cancer treatment centers. The cancer treatment centers usually uses advanced research and experimental treatments to aggressively treat the form of cancer the patient has. Many people are choosing this route of treatment because of the number of cancer patients going into remission with this aggressive treatment. The problem is that is it not always covered by insurance.

When doing my research I was educated on the several forms that affect all walks of life. The form of cancer that has affected me the most is breast cancer. This affect women as well as men. The myth is that it doesn’t affect men as often but that is what it is A MYTH. My mother has several scares with lumps in her breasts and had to have lumpectomies every time and at a high rate. She had three lumpectomies so my risk is higher that I will have lumps and have to be checked often. What is scary is that breast cancer has an expectancy of 235,000 new cases just in 2014 alone. The next most common is prostate cancer (men) and lung cancer in a close third. The new cases for women are a staggering 232,670 for women and 2,360 for men. The rate of deaths due to breast cancer or 40,000 for women and 430 for men.

It is very important that we as men, women, young, and old get yearly physicals and blood work to detect anything early. It scares me to think that I could have prevented something from occurring with just a simple checkup, Even if you don’t have insurance there are agencies that will give a free physical, free mammograms, and cancer screenings. Don’t hesitate to get your physical today it always help to be proactive instead of reactive.

Until The Next
